The Swahili Institute is a cultural and educational initiative devoted to promoting the Swahili language and the heritage of Kenya around the world. At the core of the Institute is a passionate team of Swahili language educators and content creators who combine academic rigor with real-life teaching experience and a genuine love for the Swahili linguistic tradition.

CHEBET
She takes care of marketing as well as keeping a consistent visual image of Kenya across all our language and cultural contents. Between work and raising two kids, she genuinely enjoys staying at home and cooking Kenyan dishes, gathering friends and family around the table.
Her husband was born in the United States, and watching him adapt to life in Kenya left a deep impression on her. Learning a new culture, navigating a new language, and making mistakes without giving up taught her how powerful perseverance can be. She wishes you the best of luck in you studies, especially when it feels challenging. With patience and consistency, the language will slowly become part of you — just as it did for her husband.


JUMA
Juma is a teacher by profession, but he likes to spend life outdoors. When he’s not in the classroom, you’ll likely find him hiking through open landscapes, running along dusty paths, or spending quiet time in the savanna with his dogs. Nature is where he feels best , and it shapes the way he sees the world and connects with others.
He loves camping trips with friends, long evenings around a fire, and sharing a good beer while exchanging stories under the stars. Kenya’s natural beauty is something he never takes for granted, from the wide plains of the Maasai Mara to the dramatic views of the Great Rift Valley, the wildlife of Amboseli, and the slopes of Mount Kenya.
Juma says he hopes to share not only his Swahili knowledge, but also his experiences and deep appreciation for Kenya’s natural wonders.


MARY
Mary is the careful eye behind the scenes, revising and refining our official educational materials to make sure everything is clear, easy to follow and up to the highest standards.
Outside of work, she has a quiet life with her family. She loves being near the beach, especially boating and swimming, which give her a sense of freedom. In her free time, she also enjoys singing, a simple pleasure that lets her express herself in a more creative ways, both in Swahili and English.
Her colleagues comment that Mary looks younger than she actually is, something she laughs about and doesn't take too seriously.


KAMAU
Kamau is a university professor with extensive experience teaching Swahili and a deep expertise in African languages. Over the years, he has become a true reference point for his colleagues, known not only for his academic knowledge but also for his calm, thoughtful approach and his naturally kind and gentle manner.
Outside of work, Kamau enjoys watching football matches, with a special interest in the UK Premier League. Family plays a central role in his life. As a father of four, he takes great joy in teaching his children English while also helping them appreciate and master their native language. He says that passing on respect for languages at home feels just as meaningful to him as his work in classrooms and often gives him new ideas for lessons.


ASHA
With a degree in literature, she has always been drawn to words and the way they connect people and cultures. Teaching is not just a profession for her, but a genuine passion. She enjoys connecting with fellow language enthusiasts, loves reading and often spends her evenings chatting with friends about the latest Netflix shows and sharing recommendations.
Living in Mombasa, she enjoys going to cafés around the city, where she feels inspired by the conversations and sounds around her. In her free time, Asha says she also likes to take care of animals.
She truly hopes you will enjoy her lessons and feel inspired to keep learning kiswahili.


SAMUEL
Samuel says he has always been driven by a deep curiosity about the past and the stories that shape who we are today. He studied history and has been a true history buff for as long as he can remember. Museums are among his favorite places, but his interest in history goes beyond books and classrooms. as he enjoys historical video games, films, and theater performances, appreciating how different mediums bring the past to life.
Alongside this passion, Samuel loves sharing the Swahili language with the world. He sees language as a bridge to history and culture, and he hopes that through his lessons you’ll not only learn Swahili, but also gain a deeper appreciation for the rich heritage behind it.
